Leader’s Community Group Study Guide
For the week of February 23, 2020
ANNOUNCEMENTS/REMINDERS
This week’s prayer time will focus on preparing us for the Church Wide Serve Day and beyond. We want to show our community God’s love in very practical ways and pray that our projects, attitudes and words will have great impact.
Church-wide Serve Day, February 29, 2020, 9:00am – 2:00pm. Register your CG at www.stfchurch.com/events
GETTING TO KNOW YOU
1. As a teenager or college student, how did you decorate your room or living space so that it was really “you”?
2. Who is your favorite elderly person in our church (or older than you)?
(We have many senior saints who serve faithfully to the younger generation through Awana, VBS, discipleship, Sunday School prayer time, Sunday Children’s classes and much more. Take a moment to encourage your CG members to thank our amazing seniors)
3. From this weekend’s sermon, which one statement, point or insight was most helpful, challenging or even confusing to you personally?
DIGGING DEEPER
1. Read 2 Timothy 1:9. This weekend we learned the difference of “Calling” and “Purpose”. Calling was “What you have in your hand, your day to day challenges whereas purpose is what you have in your heart, what you love to do or are passionate for. Share with the group what your day to day looks like and what you are passionate about in your heart.
(An example to help members get started: Tim Tebow makes using his calling of playing football for his purpose of sharing the gospel)
2. God gives believers enough time, energy, wisdom, grace and spiritual power to do everything He intends them to do each day. How might embracing this truth change your perspective on living for Christ and leading others?
(2 Corinthians 12:9 and Philippians 4:13 reminds us we have all we need to be obedient to what God has called us to do)
3. Paul graciously met people where they were to call them to new life in Christ. One of the people he invested a lot of time with was young Timothy. With whom do you need to share the good news of the abundant life Christ provides? Who is your “Paul”(investing time in you)? Do you have a “Timothy”(you investing time in someone younger in the faith) in your life?
TAKING IT HOME
1. Read Colossians 1:17. We were saved for His purpose; called for his purpose; graced for His purpose. Its all about Him and His glory. What does your calendar, bank account, thought life, bucket list and daily communications show you are most passionate about?
2. Consider what God has “put in your hand” right now that seem “small” but have the opportunity to have a massive impact for His kingdom. What could you do to be intentional in your daily calling? (Examples include: not going to self-check out so that you can have a conversation with the grocery clerk; hosting a Community Group in your home; having extra snacks so that the neighborhood kids choose your house as the “fun” house; offering to chauffeur kids or colleagues to/from school/work or events in prayerful hope for a spiritual conversation; inviting the unlikely co-worker for coffee; inviting unsaved friends to be your work-out buddy.)
3. How can this group pray for you?
PRAYER REQUESTS
Pray through the following to prepare your group for Church Wide Serve Day.
In our day to day life we all encounter opportunities to show God’s love. This weekend we have the unique opportunity to be intentional about it through our Church-wide serving day. How can the following verses shape your attitude and actions throughout this experience?
Matthew 25:37-40
“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? [38] When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? [39] When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
[40] “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’ [NIV]
John 13:12-17
When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. [13] “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. [14] Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. [15] I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. [16] I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. [17] Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. [NIV]
Romans 12:3
For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. [NIV]
Philippians 2:5-6
Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
[6] Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, [NIV]
1 Peter 3:15
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, [NIV]
Why would it be important to keep these verses in mind while you serve?
