COMMUNITY GROUP STUDY GUIDE
For the week of October 10, 2021
QUICK REVIEW
Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything you heard for the first time or something that caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
MY STORY
1. What are your main priorities in life? Meaning, what things do you spend the most time and energy pursuing? (No Sunday school answers please, — just honest ones.)
DIGGING DEEPER
1. This past week we learned about the first miracle Jesus performed. However, miracles didn’t start there. Well before Jesus came to earth, God’s chosen people have witnessed many miracles. Read Isaiah 43:8-10, where God challenged the people of Israel because they had experienced His power. In your opinion, what kind of responsibility comes with that kind of knowledge?
Isaiah 43:8-10 (New Living Translation)
8 Bring out the people who have eyes but are blind,
who have ears but are deaf.
9 Gather the nations together!
Assemble the peoples of the world!
Which of their idols has ever foretold such things?
Which can predict what will happen tomorrow?
Where are the witnesses of such predictions?
Who can verify that they spoke the truth?
10 “But you are my witnesses, O Israel!” says the Lord.
“You are my servant.
You have been chosen to know me, believe in me,
and understand that I alone am God.
There is no other God—
there never has been, and there never will be.
2. Read John 2:1-11. What words and actions of faith stand out to you?
John 2:1-11 (New Living Translation)
2 The next day there was a wedding celebration in the village of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the celebration. 3 The wine supply ran out during the festivities, so Jesus’ mother told him, “They have no more wine.”
4 “Dear woman, that’s not our problem,” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.”
5 But his mother told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
6 Standing nearby were six stone water jars, used for Jewish ceremonial washing. Each could hold twenty to thirty gallons.7 Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” When the jars had been filled, 8 he said, “Now dip some out, and take it to the master of ceremonies.” So the servants followed his instructions.
9 When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants knew), he called the bridegroom over. 10 “A host always serves the best wine first,” he said. “Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!”
11 This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory. And his disciples believed in him
What about Mary’s words and relationship with Jesus are good examples for you to follow, and why?
3. How would your life be different if you were to “do whatever he tells you”? In what area of life do you need a miracle right now?

TAKING IT HOME
1. As with the servants from the passage in John 2, Jesus transforms our simple, obedient acts of faith into experiences of His great power. What action in obedience is the hardest for you?
- Presenting your difficulty to the Lord in prayer
- Listening for His command
- Looking for the next way to obey Him
- Expecting Him to enable you to obey through faith
- Acting immediately and trusting Him with the consequences
2. Jesus came in power to bring new creation and overflowing joy into our common life experiences. Where is the wine level (zest for life) in your life right now:
- overflowing
- half-full
- running out fast
- empty
